to “The Joann Haist Collection” website!
For nearly twenty years, former Pigeon
resident Joann Heasty Haist
spent countless hours researching and cataloging history from Pigeon
Progress newspapers from 1897 to 1980. As a
member of Pigeon Historical Society since its founding
in 1976, she often found no resource to answer inquiries
about town history including businesses and families’ records such as births,
marriages, and deaths. After retiring, she began her research.
In May of
2003, Mrs. Haist donated her
collection of notebooks to the Pigeon District Library.
The Joann Haist
Collection of
53 books
includes:
5 picture scrapbooks of Pigeon and surrounding
towns.
2 scrapbooks
of 50 years of class reunions for the Pigeon High School
Class of 1949.
1 scrapbook
of 1978 Pigeon Diamond Jubilee Celebration.

on Pigeon businesses which are indexed by physical location. Each business location is given a number which
corresponds to the same number on a map at the front of each business book.

on births which are indexed by year, beginning with
1897.
22 albums
on obituaries which are indexed alphabetically by last name, with a
listing of an album’s obituaries at the front of the book. A woman’s married name appears first, followed by her
maiden name, if it was available. Cemeteries and their locations are
listed at the front of each book.

alphabetically by the groom’s last name, except for the following names that
are filed under the bride’s last name because the groom’s name was not

Only family members are mentioned as wedding attendants.
Some weddings list a day of the
week, not a specific date.
Each entry in an
album lists the publication date of the newspaper from which the information
was taken, so you can read the original article if you wish to double check any
information.

publication days changed over the years.
From September 1897 to November
26, 1954, the publication day was Friday.
From December
2, 1954 to September
27, 2001, the publication day changed to Thursday.
Since October 3, 2001,
the publication day has been Wednesday.
Divorces are listed in the A-B book of marriages.
Work is currently underway to digitize parts
of the Joann Haist Collection to make the information accessible via the
Internet.
