The Joann Haist Collection
Births Marriages Obituaries Cemeteries
This collection of notebooks was donated to the Pigeon District Library by Mrs. Dryden (Joann) Haist, formerly of Pigeon. Mrs. Haist compiled the information over several years, using Pigeon newspapers from 1897 to 1980.
Each Marriage notebook lists marriages in alphabetic order according to the groom's last name, except for the following names that are filed under the bride's last name because the groom's name was not available:
Each sheet lists the publication date of the newspaper from which the information was taken, so you can read the original article if you wish to double check any information.
One note of interest - some weddings are listed on a day of the week, without a date. Newspaper publication days changed over the years. From September 1897 to November 26, 1954, the publication day was Friday. Beginning on December 2, 1954, the publication day changed to Thursday. Since October 3, 2001, the publication day has been Wednesday.
The Joann Haist Collection of 53 books includes:
5 picture scrapbooks of Pigeon and surrounding towns
2 scrapbooks of 50 years of class reunions for the Pigeon High School Class of 1949
1 scrapbook of 1978 Pigeon Diamond Jubilee Celebration
22 albums of obituaries
9 albums on marriages
1 album on births
Births are indexed by year, beginning with 1897.
Marriages are indexed alphabetically by the groom's last name, except for the following names that are filed under the bride's last name because the groom's name was not available:
Katie & Ella Bliss
Grayce & Georgia Gould
Erb & Alice Wideman (filed under E.)
Only family members are mentioned as wedding attendants.
Divorces are listed in the A-B book of marriages.
Businesses are indexed by physical location. Each business location is given a number which corresponds to the same number on a map at the front of each business book.
Obituaries are indexed alphabetically by last name, with a listing of an album's obituaries at the front of the book. A woman's married name appears first, followed by her maiden name, if it was available. Cemeteries and their locations are listed at the front of each book.
